In 2010, she became the first black actress to portray the famous historical character, Ophelia in the National Theater of London’s production.

She moved with her mother from Ethiopia to Ireland at the age of 4 after the break out of political violence. However, her father got stuck in his native country.

Her father died in a car accident when she was 7. She had to undertake therapy in her early 30s to psychologically come to the terms of her father’s death.

She got an urge to pursue an acting career after she watched one particular scene in the 1986 fantasy movie. That particular scene had David Bowie walking down the stairs.

In 2020, she was ranked at the #10 spot in The Irish Times‘ “Ireland’s greatest film actors” list.
