He was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 6th round, 157th overall of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft during his collegiate years.
During the 2009-10 season, he was a lead scorer of the NCAA with 30 including 2 in the National Championship game. At the time, he scored 3 hat-tricks in 10 games in one stretch.
After officially signing a contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets, he started playing for the Springfield Falcons, which turned out to be his team’s affiliate. During his time with the Falcons, Atkinson showed an impressive work by recording 3 goals and 2 assists for 5 points in 5 games.
Atkinson’s first NHL goal was recorded on October 10, 2011, in a match against Cory Schneider of the Vancouver Canucks.
On January 4, 2012, he was named to the 2012 AHL Eastern Conference All-Star Team as a result of his outstanding performance with Springfield in the 2011-12 AHL season during which he scored 15 goals and 10 assists through 30 games. At the time, he was also one of the 13 rookies to be named to the 2 All-Star teams.
On April 5, 2012, he recorded his first career NHL hat-trick against the Colorado Avalanche in a 5-2 Blue Jacket win. His 2nd hat-trick win came 3 years after in a match against Chicago Blackhawks. During the 2015-16 season, he recorded his third hat trick in a 5-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens. In the 2017-18 season, he recorded his 4th hat trick in a match against the Philadelphia Flyers which helped the Blue Jackets win their 6th straight game.

On November 16, 2017, Atkinson had signed another 7-year contract extension with the Blue Jackets for $41.125 million which amounted to $5.875 million in total annually.
