However, he faced legal trouble during his junior year, when he was charged with felony theft. He eventually pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and converted to Islam, changing his name to Ahmad Rashād in honor of his mentor, Rashad Khalifa, a biochemist of Egyptian-American descent.

Ahmad Rashād’s NFL Career

Ahmad Rashād was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1972 NFL Draft and made the UPI All-Rookie Team. He was later traded to the Buffalo Bills, but a knee injury kept him out of the 1975 season. Rashād trained with the Seattle Seahawks before being traded to the Minnesota Vikings, where he had great success. He earned four Pro Bowl selections and finished his NFL career with 495 passes for 6,831 yards and 44 touchdowns. One of his most memorable catches came in a 1980 game against the Cleveland Browns, where he caught a Hail Mary pass and led his team to victory. Apart from football, Ahmad Rashād also played professional basketball. He signed a two-day contract with the Philadelphia 76ers just before the launch of his “NBA Inside Stuff” program in 1990. He played in the first preseason game held at the newly constructed Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where many fans came to cheer him on due to his former career with the Minnesota Vikings. In the game, Rashād scored the only points of his NBA career after knocking down a 20-foot shot. He was given a perfect NBA record thanks to the 76ers’ 102-96 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Rashād announced his retirement from basketball in a post-game interview.
